EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The season is only two days old, but for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team, it's been an all-or-nothing start to the season.

A day after opening with a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to Carleton, the Cardinals bounced back with an 8-1 nonconference win over Ripon in the first of two matches Sunday. The second match didn't go quite as well, however, as host UW-Eau Claire handed SMU a 9-0 setback.

SMU's Keith Welch (Fort Wayne, Ind.) collected his first collegiate singles win with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1, while Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) and #Andy Weigman (Maple Plain, Minn.) found the going a bit more difficult, as Loeffler won 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3, while Weigman posted a 7-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 5. Jack Schway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Brian Kasel (Minneapolis, Minn.) both won by default for the Cardinals.

In doubles, Pawel Czczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland) and Schway teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1, with the other two Cardinal teams winning by default.

UW-Eau Claire proved to be a very ungracious host in the Cardinals' second match of the day, as the Blugolds swept all six singles matches in straight sets, while wining 8-1, 8-4 and 8-0 in the three doubles matches, respectively.

The Cardinals, who move to 1-2 overall, return to action Friday, traveling to Milwaukee, Wis., for a nonconference match against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
