WINONA, Minn. — Well-rested and energized, the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team put an end to its three-match losing streak in convincing fashion Friday evening.

The Cardinals did not lose a set in handing Northwestern a 9-0 nonconference setback at the Winona Indoor Tennis Center.

“We played very well, and it was good to see the guys put it all together,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “It was a good, solid, overall performance.”

The Cardinal cruised to straight-set singles wins in all six matches, including 6-0, 6-0 wins by David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) and Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) at No. 5 and No. 6.

SMU also dominated the three doubles matches, highlighted by an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles by Loeffler and Keith Welch (Fort Wayne, Ind.)

“We needed a match like this,” said Halberg, whose team is back in action Saturday traveling to Bethel for a 2 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. “Hopefully this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
