Scots' depth too much for Cardinals in 9-0 loss

Match Summary vs. Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg, the biggest difference between his Cardinals and host Macalester wasn't necessarily the tennis that was played, but the depth and experience of the two teams.

The Scots used both of those assets — depth and experience — Friday evening, handing SMU a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

“I thought we played tough against a very good Macalester team,” said Halberg. “There was some very good tennis played on both sides — the two and three doubles and three, four, and five singles matches were all very tight matches.

“(Macalester's) depth and experience just proved to be too much in the end.”

After sweeping the three doubles matches, winning 8-2, 8-2, 8-4, the Scots completed the win with straight-set victories in all six singles matches.

“We're a very young team and the guys are all kind of learning as they go,” said Halberg, noting that his No. 1 through 4 singles players are all freshmen and sophomores, and he does not have a senior on the roster. “We just have to keep our heads up and keep battling.”
