Match Summary vs. St. Thomas
ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was of those “bad bounce” kind of day for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis teams.
The Cardinals came out on the short end of an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision against St. Thomas Sunday afternoon.
Take a way a bounce or two, however, and it could have easily been a different result.
“It was one of those days where everything just seemed to go against us,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We came close to being up 2-1 after doubles — No. 1 doubles rallied from an 0-3 start and had break point to even the match at 7-7, only to lose the point, and the match, 8-6.
“Add to that having two three-setters go against us (in singles play) — despite holding match points at both — and it was just one of those days when nothing went right.”
Toni Troumbly (Bovey, Minn.) and
Courtney Spartz (Western Springs, Ill.) collected SMU's lone win, teaming for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Tommies, however, swept the six singles matches — including three-set marathons over SMU's
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis. / 6-4, 1-6, 12-10) at No. 1 and Troumbly at No. 3 (7-6, 3-6, 11-9) — to seal win.
“St. Thomas is a very tough team,” Halberg said. “But we'd love to get another shot at them — today just wasn't our day.”
