BEREA, Ky. — The Saint Mary's University tennis teams enjoyed four days of training in Hilton Head, S.C., and Thursday, the Cardinals put that training to good use, as both the SMU men's and women's teams rolled to 9-0 nonconference victories over Berea College.

“We had a good week (in Hilton Head) and put it to good use today,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg, whose women's team posted its fourth straight win, while the Cardinal men snapped a two-match losing streak. “(Berea) has a beautiful campus and extremely nice outdoor courts — it was a great experience for all of our athletes.”

But not quite such a great experience for the host Mountaineers, who managed to win just 11 games in losing all six women's singles matches in straight sets, while the SMU men were equally as dominant, dropping just 15 games in five of the six singles matches, with Jack Schway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) needing all three sets to dispose of Berea's John Damron 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 2 singles.

#Pawel Szczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland) posted a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles, while David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis. / 6-3, 6-1), Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn. / 6-2, 6-1), Andy Weigman (Maple Plain, Minn. / 6-0,, 6-0) and Brian Kasel (Minneapolis, Minn. / 6-0, 6-1) were also victorious for the Cardinals.

On the women's side, nobody lost more than three games in any of the six singles matches, with Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis. / 6-3, 6-1), Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn. / 6-1, 6-1), Courtney Spartz (Western Springs, Ill. / 6-1, 6-0), Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis. / 6-1, 6-2), Brittney Nielsen (Apple Valley, Minn. / 6-1, 6-0) and Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn. / 6-0, 6-0) all picking up straight-set victories.

“It was a nice way for us to start our trip home,” said Halberg. “We played some very good tennis, which was really good to see.”
