MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Playing in frigid temperatures — not to mention winds that were howling upwards of 50 mph — Tuesday evening was a good night to stay inside and out of the elements.

Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team, that's exactly where their offense remained — in hiding — as the Cardinals were held off the scoreboard for the fifth straight game in falling to Augsburg 2-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest a Edor Nelson Field.

“We played really well,” said SMU coach Chris Dembiec. “We missed to really good (scoring) chances from point-blank range in the first half, and when your offense is struggling, those are the chances you really need to covert on.

“The conditions were absolutely miserable — it was a tough night to play,” Dembiec added. “The effort was there. We just couldn't convert on the offensive chances we had ¬— while Augsburg made the most of theirs.”

The Cardinals and Auggies battled to a 0-0 deadlock through 45 minutes, thanks in large part to the six-save first-half effort of SMU goalkeeper Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.).

The Auggies finally broke through in the game's 52nd minute, as Chad Gilmer beat Williams on a free kick for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Augsburg would tack on its second goal with 16 seconds remaining in regulation en route to its 12th win of the season.

The Cardinals, who fall to 0-9-0 in the MIAC and 2-15-0 overall, close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday, playing host to St. Thomas in the final collegiate home game for SMU seniors Steve Boussie (Troy, Mich.), Ryan Rademacher (La Crosse, Wis.) and Andy Adair (Woodbury, Minn.). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
