ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the first time this season, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams faced the difficult task of competing on back-to-back days.

Which seemed to suit the Cardinals just fine.

SMU, coming off a pair of dual-meet losses to Macalester on Friday, was back in the pool Saturday afternoon, competing in the Macalester Invitational.

And if the Cardinals were feeling any signs of fatigue, they certainly didn't show it, as the SMU men placed third in Saturday's Macalester Invitational, while the SMU women were fifth.

“This was a great day for us,” said SMU coach Eric Lindquist. “For us to come back and swim the way we did after a tough dual meet Friday was good to see.

“Good strong swims all the way around.”

For the Cardinals' Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa), Saturday's invite was as easy as 1-2-3, as the sophomore picked up a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2;02.86), second in the 200 IM (2:08.26) and a third in the 100 backstroke (57.39). Brandon Matis (Blaine, Minn.) chipped sixth-place effort in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.03) and a pair of eighth-place efforts in the 400 IM (5:05.02) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.28).

Lisa Lucas' (Gunnison, Colo.) third-place showing in the 1000 freestyle (12:01.46) led the way for the SMU women, while Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) was fourth in the 200 IM (2:30.86) and fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:44.53). Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) pitched in a sixth in the three-meter diving (174.25) and Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.) recorded a seventh in the 200 backstroke ()2:26.75).

The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 3, when they take part in the Hamline Quadrangular.
