BELOIT, Wis. — if the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team was showing an ill effects from their season-opening 9-0 loss to Carleton on Jan. 30, they certainly didn't show it Friday evening, as the Cardinals bounced right back to post a 9-0 sweep of their own, dropping Beloit College 9-0 in a nonconference match.
“It was good to see us bounce back and get back to .500,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We played very solid tennis tonight. We were the better team and I think we showed that.”
The Cardinals won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, losing just 14 games in those 10 sets, while
Jack Schway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) the lone SMU player to go the distance, dispatching of Beloit's Phil Ramsbottom 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 3 singles.
SMU completed the sweep with three dominating performances in doubles, winning 8-0, 8-4 and 8-0, respectively.
The Cardinals (1-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, taking on St. Norbert and Concordia-Wis. in a pair of nonconference matches.
