DEPERE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team entered Saturday's nonconference matches against St. Norbert and Concordia-WI with a 1-1 record — a 9-0 victory and a 9-0 setback.
And the Cardinals exited Saturday with a 2-2 record — adding a 6-3 win and a 6-3 loss to its resume.
“I thought we played some pretty good tennis,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team dropped Concordia-WI 6-3, while falling to St. Norbert by the same score. “We were solid top-to-bottom against Concordia, we just weren't quite deep enough against St. Norbert.
“All-in-all, it was a good day of tennis.”
Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each picked up a pair of singles wins, with Lunka beating Concordia's Brian Tresedder 3-6, 6-4, 10-1 and St. Norbert's Jordan Bauer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while Puff was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Concordia's Thao Lor and a 4-6, 6-3, 11-0 winner over St. Norbert's Nate Tackaberry at No. 4.
Lunka was also perfect in doubles, teaming with
Jack Schway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) to win 8-6 in both matches at No. 1 doubles.
