WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had not played since Jan. 30, when the Cardinals dropped a season-opening 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Carleton.
Twenty-seven days later, the Cardinals were finally back on the court — and rust-free — as SMU cruised to a 9-0 nonconference win over Northwestern Friday evening at the Winona Tennis Center.
“The ladies played well after such a long layoff,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We played aggressively in the doubles matches and then patiently and decisively in the singles (matches).
The Cardinals dropped just five games in sweeping through the three doubles matches, while losing just 15 games in picking up straight-set victories in all six singles matches.
“This was a good match to bring us into a challenging weekend against Winona State (Saturday) and Macalester (Sunday),” Halberg said. “Hopefully we can keep things rolling.”
