WINONA, Minn. —
Michael Lunka (Eden Prairie, Minn.) rallied from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to beat Macalester's Chris Fowler 6-3, 10-6 Sunday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.
That, however, was the lone bright spot for the Cardinals in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against the Scots, as Macalester cruised to straight-set wins in four of the other five singles matches and swept the doubles en route to an 8-1 victory at the Winona Tennis Center.
“Macalester is a very talented team, and they showed that today,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “I thought we played some pretty good tennis — Mike's match at No. 1 singles was an outstanding match — we just weren't deep enough against a talented squad like (Macalester).”
The Scots did not lose more than four games in four of the remaining five singles wins, while SMU's
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) won his opening set at No. 4 singles, only to drop the next two sets 6-4, 10-3 in falling to Macalester's Evan Elderbrock.
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 2-3 overall) are back in action next weekend, playing host to Milwaukee School of Engineering in a 6 p.m. match on Friday, before traveling to the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Club in Owatonna, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference match against St. Olaf on Saturday.
