WINONA, Minn. — Coming off a heartbreaking 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to Saint John's earlier in the day, the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team took out its frustrations on visiting Ripon Saturday evening, as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-0 nonconference win at the Winona Tennis Center.
“It was good to see us rebound after a tough, tough loss (to Saint John's),” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team has now won three of its last four matches. “We played well (against Saint John's), but just weren't able to catch the break that we needed to get over the hump. Against Ripon, we just put it all together.”
The Cardinals did not lose a set in sweeping the six singles matches, including a 6-0, 6-3 win by
Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.), while Lunka and Robert Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) combined for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles to fuel SMU's sweep of the three doubles matches.
SMU, which improved to 5-4 overall with the win, is back in action on Sunday, playing host to St. Thomas in a 2 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
