WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team didn't have enough firepower to bring down Bethel Saturday afternoon, as the Royals handed the Cardinals an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

“(Bethel) is a very good team — probably top four in the conference,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “We played some pretty good tennis today, we just didn't have enough firepower to keep up with them.”

The Royals opened with convincing wins in all three doubles matches, then collected straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches. Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) picked up the Cardinals' lone win, posting a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5.

The Cardinals, who fall to 8-9 overall, are back in action on Thursday, playing host to Gustavus in a 7:30 p.m. conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
