WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team settled for a 1-1 record during its two matches Sunday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center, but for Cardinal coach
Jeff Halberg, it almost felt like two wins.
“We played so well all day,” said Halberg, whose team dropped a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Saint Benedict, before rebounding with an impressive 9-0 nonconference win over UW-Stout. “I have no complaints. Our first match was great, every match was a battle — (Saint Benedict) just had a little more than we did.
“Then to come back and beat UW-Stout the way we did, it was a great day of tennis.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) collected SMU's two wins against Saint Benedict, with Edwards winning 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Snyder was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles.
And the duo were at it again against UW-Stout, as Edwards won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 and Snyder won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. The twosome also teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles against the Blue Devils.
Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis.),
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.),
Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.),
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Emily DeWitt () chipped in straight-set singles wins vs. UW-Stout, with Cooper and Voigt adding an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while
Samantha Franklin (Schaumburg, Ill.) and
Sarah Kennedy (Lake City, Minn.) tallying an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Cardinals, who move to 3-5 in the MIAC and 9-6 overall, are now off until next Sunday, when they play host to Bemidji State (10 a.m.) and Gustavus (2 p.m.) at the Winona Tennis Center.
