WINONA, Minn. — It's not too often that a coach of a spring sport is happy about a rain out.
But Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg certainly was on Wednesday.
The Cardinals were scheduled to travel to St. Paul, Minn., for a nonconference match against Northwestern, but thunderstorms in the area forced the match to be moved — to the friendly confines of the Winona Tennis Center.
And home proved to be very sweet for the Cardinals, who rolled to the 9-0 victory over the Eagles.
“The switch in venues was very welcome for our guys,” said Halberg. “Not having the long bus ride up and back is always a plus, and getting the chance to play on courts we are very familiar with was certainly a bonus.”
Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.),
Pawel Szczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland),
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie),
Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.),
Steve Mino (Austin, Minn.) and
Andy Weigman (Maple Plain, Minn.) all collected straight-set singles victories, while Lunka-Szczepkowski, Mino-
Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) and Rangitsch-
David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) completed the sweep with 8-3, 8-6 and 8-4 doubles wins, respectively.
The Cardinals, who even their record at 9-9 with the win, are back in action on Thursday, playing host to Gustavus in a 7:30 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
