ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg had nothing but high praise for Hamline Sunday afternoon.

And even higher praise for his Cardinals — despite a season-ending, 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to the Pipers.

“You have to hand it to Hamline, they battled hard and played a great match — but you know what? So did we,” said Halberg, whose team closed out its season with a 10-13 overall record, including a 1-8 mark in conference play. “The guys played their hearts out today — just like they have all season.

“I'm very pleased with the progress of this group,” Halberg added. “Even in the losses, this team competed well. I'm excited about the future of the men's program.”

Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and Steven Mino (La Crosse, Wis.) collected singles wins for the Cardinals — Lunka's a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 and Mino's a three-set, 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 triumph at No. 6 — while Lunka and Robert Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) added an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
