WINONA, Minn. — The rollercoaster that has been the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team's offense this season continued, as the Cardinals — coming off scoring a season-high four goals against Crown on Tuesday — were held scoreless Saturday afternoon, as UW-Superior rolled to a 7-0 nonconference victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
“It's tough, we just weren't able to generate any offense — we weren't able to string three passes together,” said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team falls to 2-3-0 overall with the loss. “The plain and simple truth is, we got outworked today — all over the field.”
The Yellowjackets got on the board in the game's 16th minute as Thomas Shuldheisz scored the first of his two goals, while Ben Royce also beat SMU goalkeeper
Phill Rendell (Denver, Colo.) in the game's opening 45 minutes.
Things just went from bad to worse in the second half, as Shuldheisz netted his second goal five minutes into the half, and before the final horn sounded, the Yellowjackets would add four more goals in pushing their overall record to 3-1-0.
“We got down on ourselves early in that second half and it just seemed to snowball,” said Dembiec, whose team kicks off conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Bethel for a 4 p.m. contest against the Royals. “What we need to do now is just put this game behind us and focus on Tuesday. We'll got back to work (in practice) and be ready for Bethel.”
