WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was nearly perfect in its nonconference game against UW-Oshkosh Friday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.

In fact, the Cardinals made just one mistake during the 90-minute contest.

Against a team like UW-Oshkosh — which reached the NCAA Division III National Tournament title game a year ago — however, one mistake is one too many, as the Titans took advantage of that miscue to score the game's only goal six minute into the opening half, handing SMU a 1-0 setback.

“(UW-Oshkosh) reached the national final game, and that was the standard we saw tonight,” said SMU coach Pete Watkins, whose team was involved in its 11th game decided by one goal or less. “You can't afford to make any mistakes against a team like that, and we made one and that was the difference.

“I thought we played a pretty solid game — we showed a want to score, especially in the second half, we just couldn't find the back of the net.”

Ryan Redmond scored the game's only goal in the game's sixth minute, as the Titan sophomore drilled a shot past SMU goalkeeper Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.).

Williams finished with eight saves, including a pair of dazzling diving stops in the games' final 10 minutes to keep it a one goal game. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike, meanwhile stopped all three SMU shots in recording the shutout.

The Cardinals (2-10-1 overall) return to action on Wednesday, hosting Viterbo in their final nonconference game of the season. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Ochrymowycz Field.
