WINONA, Minn. — It was a game of chances Wednesday evening as the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team squared off against Viterbo at Ochrymowycz Field.

Make that a game of missed chances, as the Cardinals put six shots on the V-Hawks' goal, while Viterbo peppered SMU goalkeeper Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.) with eight shots.

Yet, through 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, with every offensive opportunity the Cardinals and V-Hawks created, they came up empty time and time again, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 nonconference tie.

“We certainly had our share of chances to win tonight,” said SMU coach Pete Watkins, whose team has now played a pair of 0-0 double-overtime ties. “We just couldn't cash in on any of them.

“We were playing with a different, a bit depleted lineup, and I thought the guys battled to keep the game in front of them.”

Jacob Bina (West Salem, Wis.) and Juamaine Venter (Rochester, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, each finishing with two shots on goal, while Kameron McKeeth (Woodstock, Ga.) and Cory Matejowsky (Champaign, Ill.) each chipped in one.

Williams, meanwhile, collected his third shutout of the season — and of his collegiate career — stopping all eight V-Hawk shots. It was the second straight game and the third time this season the Cardinal senior has made eight saves in a game.

“There wasn't a whole lot of rhythm to the game,” Watkins said. “The cold weather and all the play stoppages never really let either team get into any real flow.”

The Cardinals (2-10-2) are back in action on Saturday, when they make their final road trip of the season, traveling to Collegeville, Minn., for a 1 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saint John's.
