MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team gave St. Thomas everything they had Saturday afternoon, but the Tommies' depth proved to be too much, as UST handed the Cardinals an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

“The guys fought hard start-to-finish,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “St. Thomas is a much-improved team — a team that probably will finish in the top three in the conference — and their depth was just a little too much for us today.”

Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) put together the match of the afternoon for the Cardinals, as the SMU sophomore recorded a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over UST's Brian McCarthy at No. 1 singles.

That, however, would be the only win of the afternoon for SMU, as UST swept the other five singles match in straight sets, while winning the three doubles matches 8-4, 8-5 and 8-5.

The Cardinals kick off a busy weekend on Friday, hosting St. Olaf in a 4 p.m. conference match at the Winona Tennis Center. SMU then heads to Jackson, Wis., for nonconference matches against Milwaukee School of Engineering and Concordia-WI on Saturday, and Carroll on Sunday.
