ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University tennis teams ran into a buzz-saw Saturday afternoon, as Gustavus gave the Cardinals a first-hand look at why they have been the dominant team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for over the past decade — as the Gusties handed SMU a pair of 9-0 setbacks.
“Gustavus is the cream of the crop in the MIAC, no question about that,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We played some very good tennis today, we just ran up against a pair of very talented teams.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had her six-match winning streak snapped at No. 1 singles, but the Cardinal junior didn't go down without a fight, falling to Sam Frank, 4-6, 6-0, 10-6.
“Bailey played a great match against a nationally ranked opponent,” said Halberg. “And
Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and
Emily DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn.) played very well at No. 3oubles. There was a lot of very good tennis played today.”
Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and
Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) gave the Gusties' top doubles team all they could handle at No. 1, but came up just short, falling 8-6.
“Like the women, our guys put up a good fight,” Halberg said. “Gustavus is so deep — they showed us first-hand why they are nationally ranked.”
