Fast start not enough as Cardinals fall to UW-La Crosse 6-3

Donny Nadeau, SMU Sports Information Director

Match Summary

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team got off to a fast start, but UW-La Crosse had the better finishing kick, as the Eagles erased a 2-1 deficit after the doubles competition and handed the Cardinals a 6-3 nonconference setback Friday at the Winona Tennis Center.

The Cardinals picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, as Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) and Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) added an 8-6 win at No. 3 to give SMU a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals weren't nearly as successful during the six singles matches, as Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) earned SMU's lone win, outlasting UW-L's C.J. Schwin 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 6 singles. The Eagles collected straight-set wins in the other five singles matches to seal the win.

The Cardinals return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Concordia in a 2 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
