Cardinals are good, but Cobbers are better in 9-0 CC win

Match Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg will be the first to tell you, it wasn't that his Cardinals played that poorly Saturday afternoon, it was that Concordia played just that much better.

The Cobbers raced out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition and never looked back in handing SMU a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

“I was very happy with the way we played,” said Halberg. “So many of the matches were real battles — especially at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. We just didn't have enough firepower.”

Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) both got their singles matches off on the right foot, with Lunka opening with a 7-5 first-set win at No. 1, while Wolford won his first set 6-4 at No. 2. Unfortunately, Matt Edin rallied to beat Lunka 5-7, 6-2, 10-4 and Chad Smith outlasted Wolford 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The Cardinals, who fall to 0-6 in the MIAC and 5-8 overall, return to action next Saturday, hosting Hamline in a noon conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
