ST. PAUL, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University tennis coach Jeff Halberg thought watching his men's tennis team drop a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Hamline last weekend was tough, imagine how he must feel after Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches against Macalester.

Not only did his Cardinal men suffer their second-straight 5-4 setback, but he also had to endure his SMU women coming out on the short end of a 5-4 decision.

The silver lining in the double 5-4 losses came at No. 1 singles, where SMU's Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) picked up her school-record 17th singles win of the season, dropping Macalester's Paige Schaefer in a marathon, 7-5, 2-6, 12-10.

Edwards also had a hand in one of the team's two doubles wins, as she teamed with sister Killian Edwards for an 8-5 win at No. 1, while Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) and Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) teamed for an 8-0 victory at No. 3. Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.) chipped in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, but it was not enough, as the Scots won a pair of three-set singles matches, and collected a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles to seal the win.

And it was more of the same on the men's side, Macalester jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion, then picked up wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to ice the win.

Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.), Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) earned singles wins for the Cardinals — with Steingraeber recording a three-set, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 victory at No. 5. Steingraeber also teamed with Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) for a 9-8 (7-2) win at No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinal men, who fall to 0-8 in the MIAC and 5-10 overall, return to action on Friday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a nonconference match against Northwestern, while SMU women return to action next Saturday with nonconference matches against UW-River Falls and UW-Stevens Point in River Falls, WIs.
