GameDay Preview
LAKE CITY, Minn. — For the second day in a row,
Gia Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.) and
Rachel Lamberty (Farmington, Minn.) led the way for the Saint Mary's University women's golf team Sunday at the Division III Midwest Classic.
And for the second day in a row, the duo matched the other shot-for-shot, as Puch and Lamberty both carded second-day 88s — after opening the 36-hole tournament with identical 91s — to help the Cardinals to a 15th-place finish.
The Cardinals shaved 11 strokes off their opening-round 372 team score, carding a 361 for a 36-hole total of 733. Gustavus captured the team title, shooting a 321-314—635 to edge UW-Eau Claire by four shots. UW-Stout was third (325-325—650), while St. Olaf (333-322—655) and Wartburg (336-321—657) rounded out the top five.
"We were so close this weekend," said SMU coach Kevin Landrum. "If it weren't for a couple hiccups, we could have really shaved off some strokes this weekend.
"This was the first time that we were in a tournament with all the other teams in the conference, so it really was like a tournament within the tournament," Landrum added. "It was good to see how we stack up with the other teams in the MIAC — especially with the conference championships right around the corner."
Taylor Drenttel of Gustavus earned medalist honors, carding a nine-over-par 153 (73-80), to beat UW-Eau Claire's Sara Mattes (78-77—155) and Emily Swift (79-76—155) by two shots.
Along with the 91-88—179s by Puch and Lamberty, the Cardinals also got a 188 (93-95) from
Lauren Ulbrich (Rochester, Minn.), a 97-92—189 from
Jenna Mrozinski (North St. Paul, Minn.) and a 190 (97-93) from
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.).
"Gia and Rachel played very well on the front nine on Sunday — especially considering the poor playing conditions with the rain and cold," Landrum said. "Everyone did a nice job this weekend, and hopefully we can keep it going."
The Cardinals return to action Saturday and Sunday, traveling to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the 36-hole Viterbo Invitational.
