GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University and Viterbo men's soccer teams played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, settling for a 0-0 nonconference tie.
Monday evening, the two teams took to the field again — and this time,
Krystian Drozdz (Franklin Park, Ill.) and Mark Burton made sure this time around, the game would not end in a scoreless deadlock.
But it did end in a tie, nonetheless, as the teams settled for a 1-1 nonconference tie at Ochrymowycz Field.
“It was a tough, physical game,” said SMU coach
Pete Watkins, whose team moved to 6-7-1 overall with its first tie of the season. “I thought our guys held their composure quite well.”
Drozdz got the Cardinals on the board with his third goal of the season 13 minutes into the opening half, as the SMU freshman took a feed from
Jacob Bina (West Salem, Wis.) and beat Viterbo goalkeeper Chris Goselin.
The Cardinals maintained that one-goal, 1-0 advantage until the 73rd minute, when Burton headed a corner kick from Jake Dellamuth past SMU goalkeeper Dontae Gillespie (Naperville, Ill.) to knot the game at 1-1.
Gillespie finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Gosselin recorded eight saves for the V-Hawks.
The Cardinals are right back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Grinnell, Iowa, for their final nonconference game of the season, a 4 p.m. showdown with Grinnell.
