GameDay Preview
ST. PAUL, Minn. — It's been a long time since the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team has left a game against Macalester with a victory.
A very long time.
Make that a very, very long time.
The Cardinals kicked their offense into high gear Tuesday, and the Cardinals' defense followed suit — and the combination was enough to put an end to a 25-year winless streak against the Scots.
SMU got a pair of first-half goals from
Matt Graber (Denver, Colo.) and rode the shutout goaltending of
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) and Dontae Gillespite (Naperville, Ill.) to a 2-0 victory Tuesday, marking the Cardinals first win over Macalester since beating the Scots in 1986.
The Cardinals, who snapped a two-game losing streak in improving to 4-5-0 in conference play and 7-9-1 overall, didn't waste any time getting on the board, as Graber scored his third goal of the season just three minutes into the opening half.
Graber would push that advantage to 2-0 midway through the opening half, launching a shot from 30 yards out that sailed over Macalester goalkeeper Jesse Yourish and into the net.
While Graber was doing his part on the offensive end, Petrich and Gillespie were doing their part on the defensive end, as both goalkeepers stopped two shots — Petrich's in the first half and Gillespie's in the second — in recording the shutout.
The Cardinals close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference game against Augsburg.
