WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team did something no other team had done against Carleton this season.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, 8-5 doubles win by
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) — the first loss in three matches for the nationally ranked Knights — wasn't enough, as Carleton handed SMU an 8-1 setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
“We played a bit up-and-down today,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “I thought the effort was good — especially in doubles. We're not satisfied with just playing well against a very good team, but we certainly showed some promise today.
“We will be a tough team to beat ¬— but our work is still ahead of us.”
Carleton entered Saturday's match with the Cardinals boasting a perfect 2-0 record — having not lost a set in back-to-back 9-0 victories — but SMU gave the Knights all they could handle.
McKennah and
Bailey Edwards both dropped heartbreakers at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with McKennah falling 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 to Kathryn Schmidt, while Bailey also fell in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, to Bridget Doyle at No. 2.
The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 1-2 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they host Edgewood and Martin Luther in nonconference matches at the Winona Tennis Center.
