WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team kicked off its second straight double-dual in impressive fashion Sunday, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1nonconference victory over Edgewood at the Winona Tennis Center.

Unlike a week ago, however — when SMU opened with an 8-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering, only to fall to Luther 7-2 in the day's second match — the Cardinals completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory over Martin Luther.

The Cardinals opened with a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches against Edgewood, then swept through the singles matches with relative ease, winning all six in straight sets.

Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.), Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.), Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.), Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) dropped a combined 15 games in their six singles matches against the Eagles.

Lunka and Steingraeber added an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Loeffler and Smith with 8-2 winners at No. 3.

And SMU was even more impressive in its 9-0 drubbing of Martin Luther, as the Cardinals lost just one game in sweeping the three doubles matches, while sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.

Lunka, Steingraeber, Puff, Rangitsch, Smith and Loeffler each picked up their second straight straight-set singles win against the Knights, while Lunka-Steingraeber, Puff-Rangitsch and Smith-Nick Kasel (Minneapolis, Minn.) were victorious in doulbes play.

The Cardinals (3-1 overall) are back in action on Friday, hosting Bethany Lutheran in a 6 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
