Northwestern Summary
WINONA, Minn. — The day might not have started the way the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had hoped, but it certainly ended that way.
After dropping a 9-0 decision to NCAA Division II Winona State, the Cardinals bounced back with an 8-1 victory over Northwestern Friday evening at the Winona Tennis Center.
Winona State swept through the doubles competition, dropping just eight games in grabbing a 3-0 lead. The Warriors then added wins in all six singles matches — but it was anything but easy.
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) each forced a third set, with Edwards falling 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 at No. 2, while Webber also won the opening set, only to fall 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
It was the Cardinals who breezed to three doubles wins against Northwestern, as SMU dropped just four games in building its 3-0 advantage. And unlike their earlier match against Winona State, this time around, the three-set matches when in the Cardinals' favor, as
Bailey Edwards picked up a 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 victory at No. 1 singles, while
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) was a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 victor at No. 3.
McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.),
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Webber each chipped in straight-set victories for SMU.
The Cardinals (1-1 overall) are back in action next Sunday, Feb. 11, hosting Carleton in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Winona Tennis Center. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
