CLERMONT, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team closed out its spring trip in impressive fashion, as the Cardinals dropped Bethany College 5-1, then outlasted Elizabethtown College 5-4 in nine innings Saturday.

After celebrating coach Jen Miller's 100th career coaching win — achieved with Friday's 7-6 win over Emerson Friday evening — by presenting her with a signed ball prior to their game against Bethany, the Cardinals decided to reward their head coach with two more wins Saturday.

One came rather easy, the other, a bit more difficult — but in the end, it was two wins that capped a 6-2 spring trip.

The Cardinals scored all of their runs against Bethany in the first two innings, plating three runs in the first and two more in the second. Alex Raske (Chicago, Ill.), Hailey Ohl (Bloomington, Minn.) and Paige Carter (Rosemount, Minn.) all had two hits against the Bison, while Kayla Peterson (Lewiston, Minn.) tossed a complete-game nine-hitter, losing her shutout bid when Bethany scored its lone run in the bottom of the third.

SMU had to play catch-up in its second game of the day, as Elizabethtown scored four times in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 advantage. The Cardinals answered with back-to-back two-run innings in the first and second, with both teams scoring single runs in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Cardinals took advantage of a Blue Jays' miscue to score the game-winning run, as Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis.) laid down a one-out sacrifice bunt that Elizabethtown struggled to handle, allowing pinch-runner Breanna Olson (Byron, Minn.) to score all the way for second.

Carter and Raske again swung the heavy sticks for the Cardinals, with Carter going 3-for-4, while Raske was 3-5 with a double.

The Cardinals (6-4 overall) are now off until March 28, when they kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader against Augsburg at the SMU Field.
