ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's tennis teams showed King's College a little Midwestern hospitality Monday evening, as the Cardinals picked up a pair of nonconference wins over the Monarchs during the teams' spring trip.

The SMU men, fresh off a 7-2 win over Marywood earlier in the day, ran their winning streak to four straight with a hard-fought, 5-4 victory over King's, while the Cardinal women made it look a bit easier with a 7-2 triumph over the Monarchs.

The Cardinal men jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the double portion, as Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) ran their record to a perfect 8-0 with an 8-6 win at No. 1, while Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) added an 8-4 victory at No. 3.

SMU then iced the victory with straight-set singles wins by Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.) and Smith at No. 3-4-5. The win was the seventh straight for Puff, who improved to 8-1 in singles on the season, while Lunka had his six-match winning streak snapped with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to King's Chris Cozillio at No. 1.

The Cardinal women, meanwhile, swept the three doubles matches against the Monarchs, including a 9-8 (7-5) win by Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) at No. 2.

SMU's top three singles players — Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.), McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) — and Zachman at No. 5, added straight-set wins to seal the victory. The Edwards sisters and Reinisch lost just one game in cruising to wins in the top three singles spots, with Zachman adding a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

The Cardinal men (7-2 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, taking on Urisinus College in a noon CST match, while the SMU women (5-3 overall) have a busy Tuesday, squaring off against Bemidji State (8 a.m. CST) and Haverford College (3 p.m. CST).
