CLERMONT, Fla. — It was a tale of two games for the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team Tuesday — and fortunately for the Cardinals, both games had a happy ending.

SMU managed just two runs in its spring trip-opener against Lebanon Valley, but two runs was more than enough with Kayla Peterson (Lewiston, Minn.) on the mound, as the junior held the Dutchmen to three singles in a 2-1 Cardinal victory.

And it was SMU's offense that took center stage in the nightcap, as the Cardinals pounded out 14 hits and scored 10 runs in completing the sweep with a 12-3, six-inning victory.

The Cardinals spotted Lebanon Valley a 1-0 lead after its first at-bat, but that would be the only run they would get off Peterson, who held the Dutchmen to one hit over the final six innings — a two-out, fifth-inning single — while walking three and striking out five.

SMU scored both of its Game 1 runs in the fourth, as Paige Carter (Rosemount, Minn.) delivered a one-out, two-run double to score Alex Raske (Chicago, Ill.) and Haley Ohl (Bloomington, Minn.).

The Cardinals' offense came to life in the nightcap, as SMU broke open a 3-1 game with nine runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to the nonconference sweep.

Lebanon Valley again scored first, plating a single run off Peterson in the second inning. SMU answered with a solo run in the fourth and two more in the fifth — before breaking the game opening with nine runs in the sixth.

Ohl, Anna Ramboldt (Goodhue, Minn.) and Nicole Olson (New Brighton, Minn.) led the Cardinals' offense, each collecting three hits, while Ohl also drove in three and scored twice. Melanie Hamliton (Homewood, Ill.) chipped in a pair of hits, as the quartet accounted for 11 of the team's 14 hits.

Peterson pitched the first five innings, again holding the Dutchmen to one run on three hits, while Carter came on in relief in the sixth, allowing two runs on two hits.

The Cardinals (2-2 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, squaring of against The College of New Jersey (8 a.m., CST) and Muhlenberg College (noon, CST) in a pair of nonconference games.
