WINONA, Minn. — Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) continued their winning ways on Sunday, but the duo's success was not enough to carry the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team to a win in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Thomas Sunday.

Lunka and Steingraeber teamed for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles — their 16th win in 17 matches at No. 1 this season — but it was all UST after that, as St. Thomas won the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage, then swept all six singles contests in straight sets to beat SMU 8-1 at the Winona Tennis Center.

“St. Thomas is impressive — and deep,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “Mike and Bobby had another solid performance at No. 1 doubles, but the Tommies depth was just too much for us today.”

Lunka gave UST's Brian McCarthy a run for his money at No. 1 singles, before falling 6-4, 7-5, but the Tommies — now unbeaten in five MIAC matches this season — would drop just 14 games in the other five singles matches to ice the win.

The Cardinals (3-3 MIAC, 9-8 overall) return to conference play on April 13, when they host Carleton in a 6:30 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
