WINONA, Minn. — When Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg says that Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester could have gone either way — it was anything but an understatement.
Four of the six singles matches went into a third-set tiebreaker, and another had a first-set tiebreaker that was decided by a 14-12 decision.
A match just couldn't get much closer.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was the Scots who left the Winona Tennis Center with smiles on their faces, as Macalester outlasted the Cardinals 5-4.
“What an incredible match,” said Halberg. “There were so many close matches that went right down to the wire. This was definitely a match that could have gone either way.
“The ladies battled so hard all day — it was an awesome effort all the way around.”
Macalester jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition, with
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister
McKennah Edwards accounting for SMU's lone win, posting an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
And the fun was just beginning.
McKennah Edwards collected a “ho-hum” 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while
Bailey Edwards — who, along with
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.), was playing her final collegiate home match — outlasted Macalester's Katelyn Glenna 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 1 singles.
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) added a 3-6, 6-4, 14-12 marathon win at No. 5 singles, but that would be it for the Cardinals, as
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.) each fell in three sets — Edwards 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 10-7 at No. 3 and Luetmer 7-6, 6-7 (4-7), 12-10 at No. 6 — and Voigt came up empty at No. 4, losing 7-6 (14-12), 6-2.
The Cardinals (3-6 MIAC, 11-10 overall), close out their conference schedule next Saturday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a conference match against St. Catherine, scheduled for noon.
