ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had their hopes of qualifying for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament dashed Saturday, as St. Catherine raced out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition and held off a furious Cardinal comeback to beat SMU 6-3 at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Facility.
“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We gave it a gallant effort in singles — the ladies really put up a fight — we just couldn't quite dig ourselves out.
After dropping the three doubles matches — all by identical 8-3 scores — the Cardinals came to life in singles play, getting straight-set wins from
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
McKennah Edwards at No. 1 and No. 2, while
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) chipped in a three-set victory at No. 5.
Bailey Edwards outlasted SCU's Michaela Burroughs 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 1, with
McKennah Edwards having a little easier time dropping the Wildcats' Maria Moun 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Reinisch, meanwhile, rallied from a 7-5 loss in the first set to beat St. Catherine's Angie Lorenzen 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
“We gave it our best shot,” said Halberg, whose team closed out the season 11-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play. “The ladies had a great season.”
