GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team snapped a lengthy winless streak against Macalester, as the Cardinals beat the Scots for the first time since 1986 — a span of 25 years — with a 2-0 victory in St. Paul, Minn.
Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field, the Cardinals learned first-hand that the Scots hadn't forgotten — and they definitely hold a grudge.
Macalester held a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal — the 13th proving to be the game-winner, as Taro Takigawa scored his first of the season to break a scoreless deadlock with 2:25 remaining in the first overtime and lift the Scots to a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory in the teams' season finale.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) did his part to keep the Cardinals in the game and force it to an extra period, as the junior netminder stopped 10 shots in regulation — six in the first half and four more in the second — and added three more in overtime before Takigawa found the back of the net, heading in a Robert Tomacek corner kick for the game's only goal.
The Cardinals, who bid farewell to graduating seniors
Zach Palma (Washburn, Wis.) and
Midhat Mujic (Rochester, Minn.), closed out the 2013 season 1-9-0 in conference play and 4-13-1 overall
