WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team was good in its 8-1 nonconference win over Northwestern Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals were even better Saturday evening.

SMU won all six singles matches in straight sets and dropped just 11 games in winning all three doubles matches, as the Cardinals completed a perfect 2-0 day with a 9-0 sweep of Loras at the Winona Tennis Center.

“We did an excellent job of concentrating on percentage tennis,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “The guys were all business today.”

The doubles teams of Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.)-Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.), Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.)-Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.)-Kristian Drozdz (Franklin Park, Ill.) gave SMU a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition.

And the Cardinals were just getting warmed up, as Puff, Steingraeber, Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.), Smith, Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and Warren Lawrencz (Rochester, Minn.) added straight-set singles wins —  including losing just six games in the Nos. 3-6 singles matches.

The Cardinals (5-2 overall) are now off until March 4, when they square off against Ursinus College and King's College during SMU's spring trip to Orlando, Fla.
