NEW BERLIN, Wis. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg could not have asked for a better way for his Cardinals to kick off a busy start to the 2013 season.

In fact, Halberg's Cardinals were perfect in their season-opening match against Wisconsin Luther — sweep all six singles matches in straight sets, while breezing to wins in all three double matches en route to a 9-0 nonconference victory at Moorland Tennis Center.

“It was a great way to kick off the season,” Halberg said. “Everyone contributed to a solid performance.”

Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.), Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.), Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Collin Raczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) dropped just a combined 19 games in sweeping all six singles matches.

Puff-Steingraeber, Rangitsch-Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Olmscheid-Drozdz (Franklin Park, Ill.) completed the sweep with doubles victories.

Friday's afternoon match was just the start of a hectic weekend for the Caridnals, who play Concordia (Wis.) later Friday, before squaring off against Carroll on Saturday and Martin Luther on Sunday.
