GLENDALE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team completed a perfect opening day Friday evening, as the Cardinals notched their second straight 9-0 sweep, beating two-time defending Northern Athletic Conference champion Concordia (Wis.) at the Paley Tennis Center.
“It was a great opening day of tennis,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team blanked Wisconsin Lutheran 9-0 earlier on Friday in New Berlin, Wis. “We were pretty solid (against Wisconsin Lutheran) — but we played really well against Concordia.
“Concordia has won the (NAC) conference title each of the last two years and they were picked to win it again this year — so this was a really great result for us.”
Just like earlier in the day, the Cardinals were unstoppable against Concordia (Wis.) sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets, while dropping just nine games in winning the three doubles matches.
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.),
Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.),
Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.),
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.),
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.), and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) were singles winners, while Steingraeber-
Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.), Puff-Rangitsch and Smith-Kaczorowski teamed up for the doubles wins.
The Cardinals (2-0 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, as SMU returns to New Berlin, Wis., for a 7 p.m. nonconference match against Carroll.
