ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team kicked off its spring trip on a high note, as the Cardinals slipped past King's College 5-4 in a nonconference match Monday evening.
“The ladies came up huge,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We were down 4-3, but our No. 2 and No. 1 doubles teams came through with big wins to give us the win.”
Lindsay Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.),
Lexi Felten (Waukesha, Wis.) and
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) picked up singles wins for the Cardinals, with Felten winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, while Krull was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 4. Reinisch, meanwhile, needed three sets to beat King's Sara Lynn 6-0, 3-6, 10-3, leaving the two teams tied, 3-3, heading into the doubles matches.
An 8-2 win at No. 3 gave the Lady Monarchs a 4-3 advantage, but Reinisch and
Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles to tie the match up at 4-4, and Felten and
Grace Zachman () outlasted King's Lynn and Maddie Griffin 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to give SMU the victory.
“That was an awesome performance,” said Halberg, whose team is back in action on Tuesday, squaring off against Berry in an 8 a.m. nonconference match. “Everyone played great tennis today.”
