WINONA, Minn. — When asked to sum up the performance of his Saint Mary's University men's tennis team in its nonconference match against Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday, Cardinal coach Jeff Halberg took a business-like approach.

Just like his Cardinals did on the court.

“We were all business today,” Halberg said after watching his Cardinals dominate the Raiders in handing MSOE a 9-0 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center. The guys did a nice job, top-to-bottom.

“We know that (MSOE) had the potential to give us a real battle — (the Raiders) finished second in their conference a year ago, so I reminded the guys to stay focused on the task at hand,” added Halberg. “And they did a great job of doing just that.”

The Cardinals opened with 8-5, 8-6 and 8-3 in the three doubles matches, and followed that up with five straight-set singles wins to go with Sam Puff's (Eden Prairie, Minn.) three-set, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 marathon win at No. 1.

Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.), Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.), Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) and Krystian Drozdz (Franklin Park, Ill.) combined to drop just 18 games en route to their five straight-set wins in singles play.

Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) put together an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, with Kaczorowski-Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Drozdz-Olmscheid adding 8-6 and 8-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

The Cardinals (12-4 overall) are scheduled to continue their busy week on Thursday, traveling to Arden Hills, Minn., for a 4:30 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match, before returning home on Saturday to take on St. Olaf at noon at the Winona Tennis Center.
