WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team played its final "tune-up" Saturday in preparation for their upcoming Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Augsburg on Wednesday.
And with
Ryan Geidner (Antioch, Ill.) and
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) at the controls, the Cardinals appear to be hitting on all cylinders, as the Cardinals cruised to a 3-0 nonconference win over Crown Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
"It was a good win for us," said SMU coach
Pete Watkins. "We were able to get a good look at a lot of different players, and everyone seems to be playing pretty well. We know that (Augsburg) is going to be a tough test Wednesday, and it was good to put together a complete, 90-minute game to give us some momentum heading into that conference-opener."
Geidner provided the Cardinals with all the offense they would need 22 minutes into the first half, netting his first collegiate goal — but if one was good, two was even better for the SMU sophomore, as he scored his second of the game in the game's 60th minute to make it a 2-0 Cardinals advantage.
Midhat Mujic (Rochester, Minn.) closed out the scoring, recording his third goal of the season with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
Petrich picked up his second shutout of the season in goal for SMU, stopping all three shots he faced, while Crown goalkeeper Janson Rudzitis finished with nine saves for the Storm.
The Cardinals, who improve to 3-1-1 overall, return to Ochrymowycz Field Wednesday for their 7 p.m. MIAC opener against Augsburg.
