WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-opener against Augsburg had a little bit of everything — great scoring opportunities, stellar goaltending and continuous back-and-forth action … not to mention a little double-overtime drama.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that double-overtime drama ended in heartbreak, as the Auggies broke a scoreless deadlock with seven minutes remaining in the second extra period to hand SMU a 1-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.

"It's a tough way to lose, no question about that," said SMU coach Pete Watkins. "I thought both teams played very well. It was a game that was going to be decided by the team that would take advantage of the (scoring) opportunity when it presented itself.

"Unfortunately for us, tonight, that was Augsburg."

After battling through two 45-minute regulation halves — and the first 10-minute overtime — the Auggies finally broke through with just over seven minutes remaining, as Danny Osip headed a direct kick off the foot of teammate Scott Clinton past SMU goalkeeper Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) to ice the win.

Petrich finished with three saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Clayton Lynch picked up the shutout in goal for the Auggies.

"There were certainly a lot of positives that can be gained tonight," said Watkins. "We can't dwell on the outcome — we have to learn from it and keep striving to get better every day."

The Cardinals (0-1-0 MIAC, 3-2-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference game against Carleton.
