ST. PAUL, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University and St. Thomas men's soccer teams squared off Saturday, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown turned into a tale of two halves.
The Cardinals dominated the first half, and the Tommies controlled play in the second.
Unfortunately for SMU — despite a 5-3 edge in shots — the Cardinals' offense came up empty, and went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.
The Tommies, on the other hand, made the most of their eight second-half shots — scoring a pair of goals midway through the stanza en route to a 2-0 conference win over the Cardinals at UST's South Field.
St. Thomas' Justin Baker broke the scoreless deadlock in the 56th minute, taking a feed from Ryan Bernhardt and beating SMU goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.).
The Tommies — who pushed their unbeaten streak to nine (7-0-2) with the win — got an insurance goal from Miles Stockman-Willes in the 70th minute, as the UST sophomore netted his sixth of the season off an assist from Nick Rapisarda.
The Cardinals (0-3-0 MIAC, 3-5-1 overall) return home on Wednesday, as SMU entertains Gustavus in a 7 p.m. conference matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
