MADISON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team saw its three-game season-opening unbeaten streak come to a screeching halt Saturday afternoon, as Edgewood netted the game's only goal early in the second half in handing the Cardinals a 1-0 nonconference setback.
SMU, playing its first road game of the season — after opening the year with back-to-back wins over Cornell and Presentation and a 1-1 tie against Lakeland on their home turf at Ochrymowycz Field — headed into the halftime break Sunday deadlocked with the Eagles at 0-0.
Edgewood's Evan Rogaczewski would break the scoreless deadlock in the game's 62nd minute, taking a cross from Andrew Aurnit and beating SMU goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) with the game's only goal.
Petrich, making his fourth straight start, finished with two saves, while his Edgewood counterpart, Matt Dammen, also made two saves.
The Cardinals, who have now played 25 games decided by one goal or less during the two-plus seasons under coach
Pete Watkins, are of until Saturday, when they return home for a 6 p.m. nonconference game against Crown.
