COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Like a bottle of fine wine, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota golfers Blake Westerberg and
Haley Jung just continued to get better with age at the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
After opening the tournament with rounds of 79 and 78, Westerberg saved his best for last, carding a four-over-par 76 during Monday's final round for a 233 total, leading the Cardinal men to a 10th-place team finish.
Jung, meanwhile, followed up Saturday's career-best round of 89 by notching a new career best with a final-round 88 for a 268 total (91-89-88) that helped the Cardinal women to an 11th-place team total of 1099.
Unfortunately for coach
Matt Johnson, the rest of the Cardinals could not follow the Cardinal duo's best-for-last lead.
Hudson Stensgard's 86 was second-low round of the day for the Saint Mary's men, which went from a second-day 322 team score to a third-round 340 and a 1007 total.
Brett Jackson shot a third-round 88 to finish at 260 (90-82-88) to finish tied with Stensgard (89-85-86), while Hunter Rau shot a third-round 90 for a 264 total (87-87-90) and Connor Brant closed with a 96 for a 267 total (94-77-96).
Kaitlyn Kling and
Kelsey Stenzel each posted final-round 92s to finish at 274 (93-89-92) and 277 (95-90-92), respectively, with Madison Gateley (93-96-95—284) and
Jennie Marx (100-92-100—292) rounding out the Cardinals' lineup.
Bethel captured the men's team title, posting a 297 total and a six-shot win over runner-up St. Thomas. The Tommies' Chris Captain claimed medalist honors, carding a one-over-par 217 (71-76-70) and edging Saint John's Ryan Gallagher by three shots (72-72-76—220).
On the women's side, Carleton ran away from the rest of the field, shooting a final round 299 for a 9435 total and a 21-stroke win over second-place Bethel. The Knights' Grace Gilmore led the title charge with a medalist score of 231 (80-78-73), one shot better than teammate Shannon Holden (82-78-72) and Bethel's Christine Piwnica (79-78-75).
