WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team made it look easy in their 2014 season-opener on Saturday, as the Cardinals cruised to a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The guys came out the blocks fast and never let up," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "It was a great way to kick off the season."
The Cardinals swept through the three doubles matches without dropping a game, while
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.),
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) all picked up straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 singles wins.
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.),
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) also won in straight sets in singles, as SMU dropped just seven games in their 12 singles matches.
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are back in action next weekend, when they play four matches in three days. SMU travels to Milwaukee, Wis., for a nonconference match against Concordia (Wis.) on Friday, before squaring off against Carroll and Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, and against St. Norbert on Sunday.
