WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team's season-opening five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt on Friday, as Carleton handed the Cardinals a 9-0 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We just didn't have enough firepower tonight," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "Carleton was just a little too deep for us, but we learned some lessons that will help us down the road."
The Knights raced out to a 3-1 lead, dropping just four games in the three doubles matches, before completing the sweep with six straight-set singles wins.
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) gave Carleton's Erik Johnson a run for his money at No. 1 singles, before the sophomore fell 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) to snap his season-opening five-match winning streak.
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) also lost for the first time this season, as the SMU senior fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 5-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, as SMU hosts Wartburg (noon) and Bethany Lutheran (7 p.m.) in a pair of nonconference matches at the Winona Tennis Center.
