MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to three straight on Friday evening, as the Cardinals cruised to a 6-3 nonconference win over Milwaukee School of Engineering.
"This was a good team win," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "We are a little banged up right now, but everyone gutted it out and really put forth a great effort."
The Cardinals opened up a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.), and
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) teamed for victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.
SMU then picked up wins in four of the six singles matches — including a three-set, 0-6, 7-5, 10-4 win by Smith at No. 3 — to seal the win. Wolford and Garen Meritt (Sioux City, Iowa) each suffered three-set singles losses, as Wolford fell short at No. 1 singles 7-6, 1-6, 10-5, while Meritt dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 decision at No. 6.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 8-1 overall — including 8-0 in nonconference play. SMU returns to action on Sunday, as the Cardinals square off against UW-Oshkosh in a nonconference match in Koehler, Wis.
